Mozambique’s President met with US Secretary of Defence

On Friday, September 22, the U.S. Secretary of Defence welcomed President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi of Mozambique for discussions regarding the two nations’ mutual defence relationship and security cooperation.
Starting in 2017, the northernmost province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique has experienced an ongoing conflict involving government authorities and radicalized militants. Secretary Austin conveyed a commitment to collaborate closely with Mozambique to address the underlying causes of the conflict and to enhance security in the region.
He pointed out the persistent and significant threat of terrorism to regional security, highlighting that both countries have been impacted by terrorism and are united in addressing this challenge. Austin expressed appreciation for Mozambique’s partnership in countering violent extremist groups in northern Mozambique, noting their cooperation with the Southern Africa Development Community, the European Union, and other entities, which demonstrates the effectiveness in combatting violent extremism.
President Nyusi expressed his gratitude to both Secretary Austin and the U.S. government, as well as President Biden, for the support provided across various areas, including the economy, healthcare, and security. He also highlighted different ways of enhancing strengthening maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
