On 28th June, the city of Dongguan, Guangdong bore witness to the formal unveiling of the China-Latin America and Caribbean (China-LAC) Technology Transfer Centre. This facility is distinguished as the only national-level institution promoting technology transfers across borders between China, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Furthermore, the establishment of the centre signifies the transition from mere consensus to concrete action, following the 2021 Forum of Science, Technology, and Innovation of the China Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Zhang Guangjun, Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, highlighted the centre’s symbolic importance in fostering international cooperation. He voiced that “China, Latin American and Caribbean countries should exemplify a renewed form of South-South cooperation in the contemporary era, achieved through superior collaboration and the transfer of scientific and technological innovations.”

The centre’s focus for the coming years has been thoughtfully outlined. Ma Hongwei, the Head Master of Dongguan University of Technology, shared their prospective areas of emphasis. He stated, “Over the next three years, our attention will be directed towards several domains, encompassing new energy sources, advanced information technology, disaster prevention, and emergency response. Chinese research institutions and commercial entities, notably those within the Greater Bay Area, possess extensive expertise in these realms.”

The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives from China, Latin America, and the Caribbean. In the aftermath of the ceremony, these representatives took part in a forum to deliberate on innovation cooperation, mutual development, and high-quality progression within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
