Education for All – a motto at Qatar 2022

Football is definitely the greatest show on Earth and the FIFA World Cup is always a good reminder of why the sport transcends every barrier and creates lengthy connections, with 32 of the best teams in the world, from different cultures and continents, gearing up for a tournament like no other.

This is why the FIFA World Cup has a legacy and a role in the world, making it a better place time and time again, even between its editions. FIFA, for its part, through the power of football, bring people together to cross borders, unite and celebrate together.

Football Unites the World is a global movement to inspire, unite and develop through football, leveraging the power of the sport to promote and protect the health of all people throughout the world.

The main pillar of this programme is the “Education for All” programme, linking football with global education and social youth development, which are highlighted on the biggest of stages, with the key help of the Local Organising Committee of Qatar at this edition of the World Cup.

For FIFA, education was key for a pilot phase of what is now the Africa Schools Champions Cup in Benin in 2021, with training even extended to young, aspiring journalists working on the tournament. The sport has also been used as a tool for knowledge development through numerous launches of Football 4 Schools.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic occasioned the largest disruption of education in history, with 244 million children across the world out of school and 70% of 10-year-olds unable to understand simple written text. This strand of the Football Unites the World campaign aims to drive awareness of the need to end education poverty and reinforce that education is a human right.

This also impacted Qatar, which has made the organisation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup a key part of its Qatar Vision 2030, which aims to harness the culture and drive of the citizens of the country to create a better world and a better Qatar.

In Qatar, education has been paramount in the last decades, with children from all backgrounds being encouraged to thrive and become better and better. This is also why the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy hosts an annual school competition in partnership with Qatar’s Ministry of Education & Higher Education.

The Middle East country sees the FIFA World Cup as an opportunity to introduce others to the culture, customs and traditions of the State of Qatar, cementing this global and historic sporting event in their minds.

To achieve this objective, the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy has launched Tamreen, an online educational programme featuring FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022-themed lessons.

The programme is targeted at students aged 8-18 and will help them develop skills in core curriculum areas, including mathematics, science, geography, art, Arabic, English and citizenship, while also gaining an understanding of the SC’s development goals and the lasting legacy of Qatar 2022.

Launched on 3 March 2002, Tamreen provides teachers with a complete toolkit, including guidance notes, information sheets, presentations, worksheets, and quizzes.

The toolkits can be used together to form a comprehensive, in-depth look at Qatar 2022, or individually to highlight certain initiatives or areas of the curriculum giving teachers, youth group coordinators or parents the maximum freedom when it comes to teaching.

More than 1,000 students and 25 governmental and private schools will take part in the first phase.

Involving young people in Qatar’s World Cup will ensure both a successful and well-attended tournament in 2022 while delivering a lasting legacy for the country and region. Our collaboration with the ministry will ensure Tamreen benefits as many schools as possible as we aim to inspire Qatar’s future leaders using the power of the World Cup,” said Nasser Al-Khater, the CEO of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
