The 16 floating hotels prepared by Qatar for the World Cup

The Qatar 2022 World Cup is getting closer and closer, and the organization is not only strengthening the city’s infrastructure, hotels and stadiums but also working to multiply accommodation options for tourists arriving in the Asian country. Floating hotels are one of the proposals that are surprising people.

One of the most innovative projects is the 16 floating hotels that have been built on the shores of North Qetaifan Island, near the Lusail International Stadium, where the tournament final game will take place.

Floating hotels in Qatar

These hotels were designed by Qetifan Projects, a sub-division of Qatar’s largest hotel company, Katara Hospitality, and alternative construction specialist Admares. These temporary homes, which will be powered by solar energy, are designed to leave the smallest possible carbon footprint.

Each of these buildings is four storeys high with 101 rooms – 1,616 in total – and a structure 72 meters long and 16 meters wide, with a restaurant and lounge bar.

The interiors of each of these hotels are designed by the Finnish company Sigge Architects, which aims to integrate the latest floating assembly technology with a modern and highly contemporary design.

In addition to the floating hotels, so-called ‘fan villages’ are being designed, which will alternate temporary and permanent installations, for example with tents and glamping structures.

But a few years ago, the glamping phenomenon was born: the same thing as camping, but with an extra dash of „glam”.

Now, going back to the floating hotels in Qatar, these will be similar to those set up during major music festivals, providing extra accommodation for an additional 10,000-15,000 tourists.

On the other hand, travelers who prefer to sleep on the float will also have the opportunity to do so. Organizers said two 4,000-room cruise ships will be anchored in Doha port for the duration of the tournament. And for those staying on them, bus transfers to the eight stadiums will be included.

The luxury ships include three swimming pools, four whirlpools, a waterfall in the Zen Garden lobby, an authentic Japanese sushi bar, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, mini golf, a tennis court, a basketball court and a poker room.
