The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed its excitement regarding the decision made by the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics organisers to propose cricket for inclusion in the Games.
The organisers of the 2028 Olympics have suggested the addition of cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash, and baseball-softball to their Games programme. Cricket’s governing body confirmed this recommendation in a statement. The organisers’ suggestions will undergo final approval from the IOC during a session scheduled for this month in Mumbai.
ICC Chairman Greg Barclay expressed his delight, saying, “We are pleased with the recommendation by LA28 to include cricket in the Olympics. Whilst this is not the final decision, it is a very significant landmark towards seeing cricket at the Olympics for the first time in more than a century, and we look forward to the final decision being taken at the IOC session in India during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup next week.”
Among the five sports recommended by the organisers, three have never been part of an Olympic programme: squash, lacrosse, and flag football. Cricket, known for its global popularity, would make a return to the Olympics after a single appearance in the 1900 Games, following the success of women’s cricket at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Baseball has been included in several previous Games, making a comeback in the Tokyo Olympics after being omitted in 2012 and 2016. Softball, exclusively for female athletes, has been featured in five previous editions of the Summer Games but was also excluded from the upcoming 2024 Games in Paris.
