It appears there’s only one Harry in London. After a full sweep at the Brit Awards this weekend, you would think there was only one artist in London – Harry Styles. And besides Beyoncé, only one in California.
Nominated in four categories – best album, best song, best artist, and best pop/ R&B act – Harry Styles won all four of the awards for which he was nominated on Saturday at the BRIT Awards, the ceremony that celebrated the best of British music at London’s O2 Arena.
His most recent and third album mixes Harry’s rock influences from the 70s with 80s synthesiser, and crowd-pleasing lyrics on toxic masculinity in “Boyfriend” alongside melodic catchy mega hits like “As it was”, with which he opened the 2023 Brits, live.
His award-winning album, “Harry’s House”, was the UK’s best-selling album at the end of 2022, selling nearly half-a-million copies. No surprise then that the British music industry throw their full weight behind him.
However, if there was a suspicion that the Brits’ golden boy won on Saturday for commercial reasons, the Grammy’s that preceded the Brits confirmed his fans agree on both sides of the pond. Only a week prior, Styles, aged 29, picked up two Grammys at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, where the U.S. music industry was celebrated.
No longer even a topic, which is another win for many fans in and of itself, Harry’s fashion statements could not be more on point, appealing to our current gender fluid teens. Manicured nails, spice girl heels, sequined crop tops, yet flashing masculine tattoos from an unbuttoned frill shirt, Styles mixes and matches genders, shattering preconceived notions.
What Harry has that appeals to his fans of all ages might have as much to do with his personality and individuality as it does his talent or looks.
BBC’s music correspondent, Mark Savage, said it best, “This is Harry’s House and we’re all just living in it.”
