Malawi has inaugurated top comedian turned politician, Dr. Micheal Usi, as the country’s vice president.
Usi replaces Saulos Chilima, who died in a plane crash along with eight others earlier this month.
During the swearing-in ceremony held on June 21, 2024, the 55-year-old accepted his promotion to high office in a poignant speech delivered in the capital.
Malawi’s vice president pledged to honor his predecessor’s memory and expressed gratitude to President Lazarus Chakwera for appointing him to the position in the power-sharing government.
According to the BBC, Usi’s appointment has divided the nation, with Malawians expressing a range of opinions.
His past as a comedian and actor has been shared on social media, with many questioning whether he has the necessary qualifications and experience to serve as vice president.
However, others have praised the appointment as a positive step in the power-sharing government.
Dr. Usi, who is known as “Manganya” from a mischievous character he plays in the popular TV sitcom Tikuferanji, is not new to fame.
Meanwhile, the late vice president, Saulos Chilima, was laid to rest in his village south of the capital on Monday.
The entire country mourned when news broke that the plane carrying Saulos Chilima and eight others had gone missing. They were later declared dead after a search and rescue operation.
A state funeral was held at the Bingu Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Sunday, where President Chakwera joined the nation in paying their final respects to the late vice president.
