The electoral commission of Chad has officially announced the scheduling of a presidential election set to take place in May and June, with provisional results expected by July 7 as part of a pledged return to democratic governance following junta rule.

Originally, the military authorities who took control in 2021 had promised elections within 18 months, but they later extended the transition period until October 10, 2024.

In a statement, the election agency emphasized the critical importance of holding the elections before the October deadline, warning of a potential legal vacuum if not adhered to.

According to the commission, the first round of the presidential election is slated for May 6, followed by a second round on June 22.

Furthermore, the agency disclosed plans to release the list of candidates approved by the Constitutional Council on March 24.

In December, a new constitution was approved by Chadians, a move criticized by some for potentially solidifying the grip of junta leader Mahamat Idriss Deby on power, as it permitted him to pursue the presidency. However, he has not yet officially announced his candidacy.

Deby ascended to power following the death of his father, President Idriss Deby, in combat against insurgents. His administration represents one of several military regimes governing in West and Central Africa, contributing to concerns over a democratic regression in the region, which has witnessed eight coups since 2020.
