What we know about the killing of Ecuador’s youngest mayor Brigitte García

In the past few months, Ecuador has witnessed a number of killings with regard to politicians with Ms. García’s being the latest.

Brigitte García, the youngest mayor of Ecuador and her communications director were found dead on Sunday, March 26.

According to her press officer, the 27-year-old and her communications director Jairo Loor were found shot dead in a car in San Vicente, the town where García made history as the youngest mayor of Ecuador.

At the moment, Ecuadorian authorities have not made any arrests or outlined the motive behind the killing.

In the past few months, Ecuador has witnessed a number of killings with regard to politicians with Ms. García’s being the latest.

Last year, the South America country was rocked by the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

For now, Police in Ecuador said the shots that killed Ms. García and her communications director came from inside a car they had rented for use.

“2 people were identified inside a vehicle without vital signs, with wounds from the impact of a firearm, which correspond to Jairo L. and Brigitte G. (mayor of the canton San Vincent).” The post on Twitter now X read.

The latest killing is said to have thrown the opposition Citizens’ Revolution party into a state of mourning after their very own won the bid to become mayor of San Vicente at the age of 26.

Gang-related deaths have been reported in the coastal San Vicente area. These killings are linked to drug gangs that are purportedly involved in the sale of drugs, including cocaine, to important markets in the United States and Europe.

Before her death, Brigitte García was about to outdoor a new project to provide portable water to her municipality and its constituents.
