The implementation of 5G technology in Tunisia represents a significant component of the state’s initiative to enhance its digital infrastructure and broaden high-speed internet accessibility throughout the nation.

According to a report by Agenzia Novia, this was stated by the Minister of Communication Technologies, Sofiene Hemissi, who emphasised the Tunisian government’s perception of 5G as a pivotal instrument for expediting digital transformation across diverse economic sectors. The government anticipates that the licensing and subsequent rollout of ultra-broadband services will occur by the close of this calendar year.

Recently, on October 30, 2023, the three principal telecommunications service providers within Tunisia, namely Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo Tunisie, and Orange Tunisie, formally submitted their applications for a competitive tender for a 5G licence, which had been initiated in July. As per data released by the National Telecommunications Authority, the total mobile subscription count in Tunisia has reached 16,258,517, indicating a penetration rate of 136.5 percent, while mobile internet subscriptions stand at 11,583,616, reflecting a rate of 97.2 per cent as of 29th February 2024.

In preparation for the initiation of 5G services, a specialised technical committee was established at the ministerial level on 24th May 2023. This committee is tasked with evaluating the various outcomes of the completed studies and subsequently determining the strategic approach that will guide Tunisia in the deployment and utilisation of fifth-generation networks.

In conclusion, the focus on 5G technology marks a transformative phase in Tunisia’s digital journey, offering the potential to revolutionise numerous sectors and improve connectivity across the country.
