Over fifty years ago, astronaut Neil Armstrong etched his mark on history with the iconic words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” as he set foot on the moon. Now, the people of London have a chance to embark on an exhilarating journey through the Apollo missions with a unique, immersive documentary experience.

Nestled in The Lightroom, a state-of-the-art London venue renowned for its interactive art and film experiences, the documentary is the brainchild of none other than Hollywood legend Tom Hanks. A lifelong space enthusiast, Hanks has poured his passion for the extraterrestrial into “The Moonwalkers: A journey with Tom Hanks.”

In the words of the Academy Award-winning actor, the documentary aims to transport viewers beyond the dry facts of the moon landing into an immersive experience. Equipped with a cutting-edge surround sound system and colossal 12-metre high screens, audiences are taken deep into the heart of NASA’s Apollo space missions.

Narrated by Hanks in his distinctive style, the documentary unfolds as a mesmerising journey, showcasing the 12 intrepid astronauts who left their mark on the moon between 1969 and 1972. However, it goes deeper by paying homage to the countless individuals who played a pivotal role in turning these historic missions into reality.

What sets “The Moonwalkers” apart is its focus on the human side of the space race. Through interviews with the four astronauts slated for the Artemis II mission, the documentary captures the deeply humanist endeavour driven by humanity’s unquenchable thirst to explore the unknown.

The Artemis II mission, scheduled to launch from Kennedy Space Center in late 2024, will see astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen orbiting the moon and returning to Earth. Glover, the first African-American set to venture to the moon, shares his aspirations for Artemis II to pave the way for future human missions, including the much-anticipated journey to Mars.

With “The Moonwalkers: A journey with Tom Hanks,” viewers are not just treated to a historical re-enactment, but an emotionally resonant experience that captures the essence of humanity’s space exploration ambitions.

The show is set to run from 6 December 2023 until 21 April 2024, offering Londoners an unforgettable opportunity to journey to the moon and beyond with the legendary Tom Hanks as their guide. For space enthusiasts and history buffs alike, this immersive documentary promises to be an out-of-this-world experience that will leave audiences awe-struck and inspired by the indomitable spirit of human exploration.
