Bahrain’s crown prince spoke with Qatar’s emir, according to the BNA state news agency, in a sign the two Gulf states could be mending relations two years after the Middle Eastern boycott of Qatar was ended.
This is the first sign of bilateral discussions and improved relations between Doha and Manama since the end of the embargo of Qatar by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates in January 2021 that lasted three and a half years.
Bahrain’s crown prince and prime minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, had the call with Qatari emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and “emphasised the importance of joint efforts to resolve all outstanding differences (…) and will continue to communicate to achieve common goals”.
Qatar’s emir and Bahrain’s king’s conversation followed a small Arab summit in Abu Dhabi hosted by the UAE’s president that both Gulf countries’ leaders attended alongside the rulers of Oman, Egypt and Jordan.
Jordan’s King Abdullah and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani discussed political, economic and investment cooperation between their countries, according to the Jordan News Agency, agreeing on the “importance of coordination on issues of regional stability”. King Abdullah reportedly reaffirmed the importance of reviving the process for achieving peace between the Israelis and Palestinians based on a two-state solution.
Saudi Arabia has led efforts to rebuild ties with Qatar and, along with Egypt, were the first to re-establish diplomatic relations after the embargo of 2017-2021.
The Gulf nations’ bilateral and regional meetings mark a major a milestone in improved relations and increased stability in the region and beyond.
