Visual artist Hetain Patel is at the helm of a movement to gather the diverse hobbies of people across the UK. His mission is to showcase the wide array of activities that bring joy and relaxation, regardless of their broader purpose.

Initially, Patel only intended to put his own hobby as a Spider-man costume collector on display. But then, a brilliant idea struck him – why not invite everyone to share their hobbies and create one massive exhibition dedicated to celebrating these personal passions?

The Hobby Cave is an open invitation for Britons to submit details about their hobbies through a form on the project’s website. Patel and Artangel will curate an exhibition that highlights the various pastimes that people pursue purely for the pleasure they bring.

It’s an audacious goal, aiming to be the largest exhibit of hobbies ever seen in the UK. Patel wants to showcase “all the amazing things you create in your spare time, from the arts and crafty to the nerdy to the techie and beyond.”

In an interview with The Art Newspaper, Patel stressed the importance of recognising hobbies as a distinctly separate category from work or traditional art. He believes that hobbies are typically overlooked and undervalued, and this exhibition aims to give them the recognition they deserve.

For Patel and Artangel, this project marks a departure from their usual high-art focus. Artangel, an established arts organisation known for groundbreaking works, has decided to shine a spotlight on the everyday hobbies of people across the UK.

Zulfiqar, a representative from Artangel, explained that while the organisation is often associated with high-brow art, they are motivated to challenge traditional perceptions of what constitutes art. By choosing to celebrate hobbies, they hope to open up new conversations around creativity and personal expression.

The exhibition is set to be a vibrant tapestry of interests, from car modification to crochet and origami. It aims to capture the imagination of visitors and prompt them to see the value in the things people do simply for the love of it.
