Tensions escalate in South China Sea: What really happened at Ren’ai reef?

In a recent incident near Ren’ai Reef, the China Coast Guard (CCG) did not take direct measures against Philippine personnel on vessels, according to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry. The Philippines was charged by the Ministry of bringing firearms and ammunition into the disputed waters.

China’s response to allegations

In response to claims from Manila that the CCG had injured multiple Philippine servicemen, ministry spokesman Lin Jian discussed the matter during a Beijing press briefing. This is the first time the CCG has inspected Philippine vessels on board while they are close to Ren’ai Reef, which is a part of the Nansha Islands in China. Lin said that the event occurred because the Philippines disregarded China’s warnings.

Accusations of secret supply missions

Lin claimed that the Philippines was making up the story that its supplies were meant for daily consumption. Rather, he claimed that in order to illegally occupy Ren’ai Reef, the Philippines was surreptitiously transporting building supplies, armaments, and ammunition to its grounded warship. The goal of the CCG’s law enforcement activities, which were aimed at stopping the unlawful resupply mission, was described as professional and measured.

Details of the confrontation

According to the CCG, on Monday, June 17, the Philippines sent one resupply vessel and two inflatable boats to the waters close to the Ren’ai Reef. These vessels allegedly approached Chinese vessels in a risky manner, even purposefully ramming them. The CCG also stated that they stopped the Philippine vessels, inspected them, and expelled them from the region.

China’s position on sovereignty

Spokesman Lin further emphasised that China wants the Philippines to promptly stop its infringements and provocations. He noted China’s resolute commitment to upholding its sovereignty, rights, and interests in accordance with the law.
