Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares Bueno, has announced the country’s intention to join South Africa’s decision to pursue justice against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

South Africa accused Israel of violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention in its war on the Gaza Strip.

In January 2024, South Africa initiated legal proceedings, alleging that Israel was committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Since the fight between Israel and the Hamas started in October, about 36,500 Palestinians have died as a result of it, according to local health experts. This is in addition to the estimated 1,140 individuals that were killed in an attack by Hamas on southern Israel.

“We made this decision in light of the continuation of the military operation in Gaza,” Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Bueno stated on Thursday, June 6. According to the Al Jazeera report, he expressed deep concern over the conflict’s regional implications during a news conference.

Bueno emphasised that Spain’s decision aimed to “let peace return to Gaza and the Middle East” and reflects its commitment to international law.

In his words, “Our sole goal is to put an end to the war and to advance on the road of applying the two-state solution”.

This announcement follows Spain’s recognition of the state of Palestine, alongside Ireland and Norway, which led to Israeli accusations of “rewarding terrorism” and the withdrawal of its ambassadors.

Spain joins countries like Colombia, Egypt, and Turkey in formally requesting to participate in the case against Israel, marking a significant development in the ongoing international legal battle.
