Meta unveils future AI tools for Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram

On Thursday, Meta Platforms offered a glimpse of its upcoming AI technology to its employees, featuring an array of tools similar to ChatGPT-like chatbots, as reported by Reuters. These chatbots, intended for deployment on Messenger and WhatsApp, are being designed to engage in conversations employing different personas.

High-ranking officials from the company, during a company-wide assembly, also displayed an imminent Instagram feature. This function will allow users to alter their photos in response to textual prompts. Moreover, a tool was demonstrated that can generate emoji stickers for messaging services. These revelations were part of a summary shared by a spokesperson from Meta.

The sneak peek gave the first solid evidence of Meta’s plans to introduce its proprietary generative AI technology to its massive user base, which amounts to 3.8 billion active users per month. This move comes following the introduction of similar tools by competitors like Google, Microsoft, and Snapchat into their respective offerings.

As of yet, Meta has not released any consumer-focused generative AI tools. However, they did announce a partnership with a small group of advertisers last month, testing tools that utilise AI to create image backgrounds and written copy variations for ad campaigns.

Over the past year, the tech giant has been reorganising its AI divisions and making significant investments to overhaul its infrastructure. This decision came after the company identified, in the early parts of last year, that it lacked the necessary hardware and software capacity to meet its AI product requirements.

At the recent company-wide session, Meta’s Chief Executive, Mark Zuckerberg, asserted to employees that the recent strides made in generative AI technology have paved the way for the company to integrate this technology “into every single one of our products.”

Alongside the consumer-focused tools, the session also included an announcement about ‘Metamate’, an AI-powered productivity assistant designed to help employees. Metamate will be able to answer queries and complete tasks based on data gathered from the company’s internal systems.

These announcements signal Meta’s growing ambition to harness AI technology across its entire product portfolio, a move that underscores its commitment to remaining at the forefront of the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
