Lionel Messi, the esteemed 2022 FIFA World Cup winner and celebrated football icon, may potentially return to FC Barcelona as his contract with Paris Saint-Germain approaches expiration. The Catalan club is making every effort to facilitate a reunion with the renowned player. However, financial constraints pose a significant challenge.

A recent report published by Sport indicates that Barcelona is formulating a proposal that entails a substantial reduction in Messi’s salary, in compliance with La Liga’s salary cap regulations. The club is reportedly prepared to offer the Argentine footballer a gross annual salary of €25 million, which is markedly four times less than the amount he earned before his departure from the club in 2021.

The proposal includes a two-year contract, which would see the seven-time Ballon d’Or recipient return to Camp Nou. In spite of the considerable decrease in remuneration, Barcelona supporters maintain hope that the allure of a reunion may be sufficient to influence Messi’s decision.

It is worth noting that Messi has not expressed willingness to accept a pay cut, particularly with regard to his tenure at PSG. It remains to be seen whether he would be amenable to such a reduction for the sake of rejoining his former La Liga team.

As for alternative possibilities, Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami has demonstrated interest in Messi. Nevertheless, it appears that the accomplished Argentine prefers to remain within the European football circuit. If the Barcelona offer fails to materialize, it is conceivable that Messi may consider relocating to the United States.

The prospect of Messi’s return to Barcelona is undeniably compelling for both the club and its supporters. Given the significant pay cut under consideration, only time will reveal whether Messi’s affinity for the Catalan club will ultimately prove decisive in the negotiation process.
