Lee Jae-myung “is fortunately recovering well” after knife attack

A surgeon who operated on Lee Jae-myung has reported that the South Korea's Democratic party leader is out of the intensive care unit and is recovering after a knife attack.

Professor Min Seung-kee from Seoul National University Hospital’s vascular surgery unit, said in a news briefing that, (Lee) “is fortunately recovering well.” However, there was a need to continuously monitor his health due to post-surgery complications.

The South Korean politician was stabbed in the neck on Tuesday during a visit to the southern state of Busan.  The incident occurred while engaging with reporters amidst touring the construction site of the Gadeokdo new airport.

The suspect who is believed to hold extreme political views was arrested at the scene and has been charged for attempted murder.

Revealing over the telephone, a court judge has cited the severity of the charges against the culprit and the possibility of him running away. However, the Busan District Court has issued an official warrant to arrest the assailant.
