Staying in a hotel should be an enjoyable experience, but what if you are secretly being watched? Although hidden cameras are becoming more and more of a problem, the good news is that you can identify them with just your smartphone.

Here’s how to safeguard your privacy in only a few minutes.

1. Check Your Camera for Infrared Light

A lot of hidden cameras employ infrared (IR) light, which is observable by a phone camera but undetectable to the human eye.

Switch the room’s lights off.

Launch the camera on your smartphone. The front-facing camera should be used because certain back cameras have infrared filters.

Keep an eye out for tiny, glowing dots. It might be a hidden camera if you move your phone around and notice a pulsing light.

2. Scan the Wi-Fi Network with Your Phone

Most security cameras include Wi-Fi connections, making remote access possible. Hidden devices can also be uncovered by apps like Fing (iOS/Android).

Make use of the hotel’s Wi-Fi.

Detect unknown devices by using a network-scanning application.

Examine further if you come across something with the label “IP Camera” or an unidentified brand.

3. Check for Interference in Wireless Signals

Electromagnetic waves from wireless cameras have the potential to disrupt phone conversations.

Walk around the room and make a call.

Certain objects may be housing cameras if you hear crackling, clicking, or static noise close by.

4. Identify Camera Lenses with a Flashlight

Switch off the lights and use the torch on your phone to look around questionable objects.

Different camera lenses reflect light in different ways, giving the impression of a tiny bright dot.

5. Inspect Common Hiding Spots

Check clocks, air vents, power outlets, smoke detectors, mirrors, and lamps. If anything looks misplaced, tampered with, or unusually positioned, inspect it closely.

What to Do If You Find a Hidden Camera?

Don’t touch it! Take photos for evidence.

Report it to hotel management and local authorities.

Cover or unplug it if necessary.

Your privacy is non-negotiable. A quick check with your smartphone can help you stay safe and one step ahead of prying eyes!
