The United States’ National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released its breakthrough Space Sustainability Strategy, which it says will actively shape the future of space operations to assure its viability for years to come.

The facts

NASA announced the first phase of its integrated Space Sustainability Strategy, which is a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable future for space activities.

NASA has long been in the forefront of promoting ethical and sustainable space operations, developing best practices, tools, and technology that are now widely implemented around the world.

The new approach unifies multiple activities across NASA, with the goal of allocating resources more effectively and addressing important concerns in space sustainability. These operations will be coordinated by a new director of space sustainability.

NASA’s strategy also prioritises global leadership in space sustainability, equal access to space, and ensuring that its missions and operations promote sustainability.

The arguments

NASA has encouraged the development of commercial space capabilities, such as satellite constellations and commercial space destinations. However, this expansion has resulted in issues such as more trash and a crowded working environment. Understanding these risks and advantages is critical to sustainability.

A cross-agency advisory board guided the development of the space sustainability plan, ensuring that varied perspectives and skills were included. Its goals include evaluating sustainability, identifying cost-effective solutions, motivating sustainable practices, and encouraging global collaboration.

NASA’s strategy defines four operating domains. They are Earth, Earth orbit, cislunar space, and deep space. The strategy’s initial book focuses on sustainability in Earth orbit, with subsequent volumes planned to address additional domains.

The space agency maintains that its commitment to sustainable space operations not only protects key space ecosystems but also paves the path for future exploration and innovation. By making preventive efforts now, NASA is protecting space for future generations, allowing humankind to continue to benefit from the immense potential it provides.

As space becomes more integrated into our daily lives, this strategic approach establishes a precedent for responsible space stewardship, paving the way for a future in which all people can experience the glories of space.
