Today is International Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South. The day was designated by the leaders of the G77 and China during the Summit on Science, Technology, and Innovation, held in Havana on September 15 and 16, 2023.
The objective of this day is to promote innovation and enhance scientific capacities within developing nations, thereby bridging the widening gap between these nations and their developed counterparts.
As the realms of science and technology evolve rapidly, many developing nations are poised to leapfrog traditional development stages by capitalising on these advancements. Recognising the critical role these fields play in addressing global challenges—such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and climate change—the International Day is aimed at fostering international collaboration and knowledge sharing. This initiative also embodies the commitment to ensure that no nation is left behind as we collectively strive towards sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The Havana Declaration, which emerged from the summit, underscores the essential nature of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in surmounting development challenges through equitable access to technology and enhanced cooperation. Following this, the United Nations General Assembly formally adopted Resolution A/RES/78/259 on January 9, 2024, affirming September 16 as a day dedicated to leveraging scientific and technological achievements for sustainable growth, in alignment with the 2030 Agenda and its associated frameworks.
As we face a changing global landscape characterised by rapid advancements, it is essential to address key challenges that continue to hinder development in the Global South—namely, governance issues and the disparity in technological access between developed and developing nations. This gap is significantly influenced by differing technological capabilities and underdeveloped frameworks for technology dissemination. Thus, the democratisation of knowledge, enhancement of research capabilities, access to financing, and facilitation of technology transfers are imperative for fostering development in these regions.
The significance of science and technology in our daily lives cannot be overstated; they have transformed communication, transportation, healthcare, and education. By advancing scientific understanding and applying technological innovations, societies have become more efficient and productive. The emphasis on scientific innovation is pivotal to the mission of enhancing the quality of life globally.
In India, Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) serve as vital drivers of economic growth and development. The Indian government is focusing on sustainable pathways that encompass economic growth while ensuring social inclusion and environmental sustainability, illustrated by initiatives promoting traditional knowledge systems, indigenous technologies, and grassroots innovations. Noteworthy advancements in the Indian S&T sector include the doubling of gross research and development expenditure, significant successes in space exploration exemplified by Chandrayaan-3, and a robust rollout of 5G technology. Furthermore, initiatives like the Quantum Computing Mission and the Semiconductor Mission underscore India’s commitment to leading in cutting-edge technologies.
The formal observance of the International Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the South is a timely initiative to present various collaborative projects aimed at strengthening scientific capacity within developing nations. It is an assertion of the global community’s dedication to innovation as a means for creating equitable opportunities and addressing pressing global challenges. In conclusion, this day serves as an important milestone in our collective pursuit of sustainable development, highlighting the necessity for integrated international efforts in advancing science and technology for the benefit of all nations.
