News of an attack that murdered seven World Central Kitchen employees who were trying to deliver aid to some afflicted individuals in the midst of the Israel-Hamas war sparked fury around the world, including in Washington.

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden talked on the phone with Israeli President Netanyahu. Biden apparently scolded Israel directly about the ongoing problem with relief workers in Gaza. Is Biden now contradicting earlier statements that he made?

The facts

President Biden is said to have had a phone call with Netanyahu where he made his feelings very to clear him. Shortly after, a statement, which many experts have described as angry, was issued by the White House.

It is becoming more challenging for charity workers inside Gaza to distribute aid due to the continuous violence. Hospitals and routes used for the delivery of relief have been targeted by Israeli Defence Forces. They argue that these attacks are incorrect because the battle has significant stakes.

Biden in his statement however said, “This is not a stand-alone incident. This conflict has been one of the worst in recent memory in terms of how many aid workers have been killed,” Biden said. “This is a major reason why distributing humanitarian aid in Gaza has been so difficult — because Israel has not done enough to protect aid workers trying to deliver desperately needed help to civilians.”

The arguments

While the growing rift between US and Israel continues, some experts have questioned Biden’s true stance and where his support during in the conflict lies.

The US president has been accused of being contradictory in his public statement where he earlier backed Israel in the conflict. In the two past months with a re-election bid in November, Biden has shown some willingness to display tougher rhetoric with Israel.

At the same time, he is unwilling to criticize and call for restraint in the attacks in Gaza. Experts argue that the US won’t impose punitive action on Israel.

A claim largely associated with suspending weapons sales and funding.

With Donald Trump as his opponent, Biden’s chances of winning reelection are currently declining. The two candidates will face off again in November 2024.

During the primaries, a large number of American voters were unsure about their stance on the economy and foreign policy, specifically with regard to Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
