Germany and Kenya pledge to deepen partnership on climate and green energy

Germany and Kenya have announced a pledge to enhance their cooperation on climate protection, green energy, and the exchange of workers following talks between Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President William Ruto in Nairobi. At a joint news conference, Ruto announced that Kenya will become a member of the “Climate Club,” established last year by the Group of Seven during Germany’s presidency, and said that his government intends to be “a robust player in that space.”

Scholz stated that Kenya’s membership in the Climate Club is an important step for nations seeking to coordinate climate policies and smooth the way toward achieving targets for reducing emissions. He also pledged additional funds for a bilateral climate and development partnership, stating that “If we want to achieve our ambitious goals, to stop climate change, we will only succeed if we make sure we do it together and effectively align our different approaches.”
Scholz’s visit to the Kenyan capital is part of a wider effort to counter Russian and Chinese influence on the African continent and to bind nations into an international alliance of like-minded democracies committed to tackling global warming.
