When news of the upcoming ‘Wonka’ movie first reached my ears, I must confess my excitement was not exactly overflowing. Did we truly require a full-length feature to delve into the origins of Willy Wonka? And then, when they announced Timothée Chalamet as the lead, I couldn’t help but question the wisdom in that decision. However, I was in for a delightful surprise.

‘Wonka’ turned out to be an absolute joy of a film, and with Christmas on the horizon, it’s the ideal festive treat. This musical whisks us back in time, long before the escapades chronicled in the Roald Dahl books and films, to introduce us to a young Willy Wonka, harbouring dreams of becoming a world-renowned chocolatier at the Galeries Gourmet.

However, things do not unfold as expected for our would-be chocolate maestro. He finds himself toiling for two rather disagreeable landlords and uncovers the sinister secrets of the Galeries Gourmet. Determined to effect change, Wonka embarks on a thrilling escapade with his friend Noodle to introduce his superior chocolate creations to the town, winning over the populace in the process.

Let’s now turn our attention to the star-studded cast of ‘Wonka’. Alongside Timothée Chalamet, we find acting luminaries such as Olivia Colman, Tom Davis, and Rowan Atkinson, among others. And did I mention it’s a musical? The fact that this film boasts a full songbook came as a surprise, but the musical numbers are seamlessly woven into the narrative, bestowing an additional layer of magic upon the film.

The songs, penned by Neil Hannon and Joby Talbot, provide the perfect accompaniment to this enchanting tale. Director Paul King, renowned for his work on ‘Paddington’, instils his trademark charm into every frame, rendering each moment a delight to behold.

As for Timothée Chalamet, he truly excels in this role. While some may have harboured doubts upon viewing the trailer, his portrayal of the young Willy Wonka exudes warmth and charm, infusing the character with his own magical essence. This film may not possess the darkness of the original, but it crafts an entirely new fairytale chapter for the cherished character.

‘Wonka’ may not lay claim to cinematic grandeur, but it captures the inventiveness and magic of Roald Dahl’s universe, rendering it a perfect addition to the holiday season. It offers a fresh take on a classic character, brimming with imagination and charm, and certainly merits a viewing. So, if you’re in the mood for a heartwarming escapade, grab some chocolate, get comfortable, and allow this enchanting tale to unfold before you.
