The FIFA Council’s Bureau has announced that Argentina will be the host nation for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023™.
This decision comes after Indonesia, the original host, was removed, and the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) submitted a subsequent bid. A FIFA delegation visited Argentina last week, inspecting the proposed tournament venues and related infrastructure. The AFA has signed the hosting agreement, along with all other necessary documents from the host nation and local authorities.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup will be held from 20th May to 11th June 2023, featuring six groups of four teams. As the newly-appointed host, Argentina will take part in the tournament instead of Indonesia. Argentina boasts the most impressive record in the history of the FIFA U-20 World Cup, having claimed the title six times, most recently in 2007. The nation previously hosted the competition in 2001.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated, “FIFA is thrilled to confirm that this year’s edition of the FIFA U-20 World Cup will be held in Argentina, as the homeland of the world champions welcomes the future superstars of global football. I would like to express my gratitude to the AFA and its President Claudio Tapia, as well as the governmental authorities, for their dedication to hosting this splendid event at such short notice.
“The U-20 World Cup serves a crucial role in FIFA’s mission to promote youth football worldwide. Since 1977, this tournament has showcased some of the finest players from previous decades, such as Diego Armando Maradona, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, Erling Haaland, and many others. Hosting this year’s event in a nation that is passionate about football will be an incredible inspiration for the stars of the future.”
Following the confirmation of the new hosts, the official draw for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023™ is set to occur on Friday, 21st April at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich. Further details will be announced in due time.
