The National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) honored 38 officer candidates at the Ministry of Defense in recognition of their participation in protecting and securing cyberspace in the State of Qatar during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ after the tournament.
Addressing the ceremony, HE Engineer Abdulrahman Al Malki explained that securing cyberspace for the tournament in particular, and for the State in general, presented a “magnitude of the challenges that would accompany the hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ – the biggest and most important tournament in the world.”
Al Malki, President of the NCSA, added that protecting the country’s cyberspace from the risks during the World Cup had entailed developing plans and precise and rapid work mechanisms to deter all risks.
In the past decade, the Gulf region has become increasingly digitalized as its respective nations seek to modernize their societies in order to achieve economic diversity. According to a study published by the Gulf International Forum, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, and Qatar are relatively better equipped than Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait to handle emerging cyber threats.
The study outlines that “Qatar actually has an impressive record of improving its cyber-readiness. Similar to that of the UAE’s, Qatar’s Ministry of Transport and Communications established a detailed national cyber strategy in 2013”.
“Qatar has admirably prioritized cybersecurity in a comprehensive manner”, and it enjoys a “higher level of readiness than other countries” stated the report. With increased digitalization comes increased vulnerability to cyberspace hackers so Qatar and the region does well to focus on the new global battlefront.
