Despite the African National Congress (ANC) losing a majority in the most recent election, Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has been sworn in for a second term as president.
Following an agreement to establish a coalition government between the ANC, the Democratic Alliance (DA), and other parties, lawmakers reelected him.
This is the first time the ANC lost its majority after an election.
Several African heads of state were among the dignitaries present during the inaugural ceremony. The inaugural meeting of parliament was boycotted by the uMkhonto weSizwe party, which was founded six months ago by former president Jacob Zuma.
The DA, three other smaller parties, and Ramaphosa’s new coalition partners are anticipated to be in the cabinet that he comes up with.
On social media, however, there are conflicting reactions. While some South Africans have applauded the president, others are doubtful that Ramaphosa would address issues such as corruption. Some urged him to “make South Africa great again” but others see this as an opportunity for the ANC leader to redeem “to redeem yourself and ANC”.
See some of the reactions below:
Congratulations Mr President ! Hopefully, this time ministers will be appointed based on merit rather than the preferences of various leagues, the tripartite alliance, struggle credentials, branches, or popularity. This is business as usual ✨
