Australia to allocate $260 million towards the development of next-generation military drones

Australia’s Defence Industry Minister announced on Friday that the country will invest an extra A$400 million ($260 million) into the production of next-generation military drones. This initiative is part of a broader effort to boost local manufacturing and generate employment opportunities.
The MQ-28A Ghost Bat, a collaborative project between Australia and a local subsidiary of Boeing, is slated for various functions, including combat roles, according to government sources.
Minister Pat Conroy emphasized the significance of this endeavor, stating, “This marks the first instance in over half a century where Australia has independently designed, engineered, and manufactured a military aircraft, showcasing the depth of innovation and expertise within our defence industry.”
With the government having already allocated A$600 million for the acquisition of 10 drones, Australia is prioritizing domestic production of defence systems. This move is justified by citing the job creation potential, particularly in light of initiatives like the AUKUS military alliance with the United States and Britain.
The additional funding for the Ghost Bat project is expected to support more than 350 jobs throughout Australia and sustain ongoing work for over 200 suppliers, as outlined in the statement.
