Snap recalls all Pixy drones over fire hazard concerns
Snap and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have issued a recall for the discontinued Pixy drone due to a fire hazard. The CPSC received reports of battery overheating and bulging, resulting in one minor battery fire and one minor injury. Owners are advised to stop using or charging the drone and its batteries.
The recall offers a refund ranging from $185 to $250 for those who purchased the “flight pack” bundle. Owners with the Pixy’s extra charger and battery combo are eligible for $40 to $50, while spare batteries can be refunded for $16 to $20. More information about the recall can be found on [support.pixy.com](http://support.pixy.com), and the refund is available for those who bought the drone from Snap, Amazon, or received it as a gift.
Snap introduced the palm-sized drone camera in April 2022.
The Pixy drone was designed to be user-friendly and pocket-sized, allowing it to take off and land in the user’s hand. It featured pre-programmed flight patterns and a 12MP sensor for capturing videos and photos. The footage could be wirelessly synced to Snapchat and edited with licensed music. CEO Evan Spiegel viewed the Pixy drone as a new way to capture moments centered around people, providing a unique perspective that smartphones couldn’t offer. While the Pixy faced limitations, such as sensitivity to wind and reflective surfaces, it aimed to provide a simple and accessible drone experience compared to competitors.
Despite its limited functionality, with no need for a controller or memory card, CEO Evan Spiegel had high expectations for the Pixy, stating that the market for personal drones was even larger than camera glasses, another hardware category Snap has explored.
The CPSC’s recall listing indicates that tens of thousands of units, including separate battery sales, were sold.
