Kenya investigates govt, public officials over fake academic certificates
Kenya’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating all arms of the national and country government offices to expose public officials in possession of fake academic certificates.
According to the EACC Chairperson Bishop David Oginde, the exercise will ensure that only qualified personnel are allowed into such public offices in the face of rising fake qualifications as well as renew the country’s credibility in such regards on the global front.
“The cases are quite a number. We are finding a lot of reports from across the country and in different categories of government offices. It has come to us as something that we really need to work on,” Bishop Oginde was quoted by local news outlet KBC.
“Some countries are already beginning to blacklist our degrees and this would not be good for the young people of this country. If you are going to get a job out of the country and you present your papers and they are not trusted it will jeopardize our move to export labour,” he added.
The EACC Chair further noted that persons found culpable of using fake certificates will be brought to justice.
“What I want Kenyans to know is that if you get a job using a fake certificate it doesn’t matter how long you work in that particular job. When the long arm of the law finally catches up with you, we shall recover all the money you got through that process,” KBC quoted.
Bishop Oginde noted that efforts are already underway to fine persons who have been found guilty of such crimes. He indicated that the Commission will also target the assets of such individuals to ensure that they duly pay for their crimes.
