Sheryl Sandberg to leave Meta’s board
Sheryl Sandberg, the former chief operating officer of Meta, has announced her departure from the company’s board of directors. Sandberg, a prominent figure in the tech industry, stated that she believes it is the right time for her to step away, as Meta is well-positioned for the future.
While she will no longer hold a formal position, she will continue to serve as an informal advisor to the company.
Sandberg joined the company, then known as Facebook, when it was still a small start-up. With her experience from Google, she played a crucial role in transforming the advertising business and overseeing the growth of Facebook’s acquisitions, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
Sandberg’s books, particularly Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, propelled her into global fame. However, the company also faced significant challenges during her tenure, including controversies surrounding misinformation, privacy breaches, and the Capitol riot.
Sandberg shared her departure in a Facebook post, expressing gratitude for her time at the company.
Shortly after Ms Sandberg’s announcement, Mr Zuckerberg responded with a short reply.
“Thank you Sheryl for the extraordinary contributions you have made to our company and community over the years,” he commented on her post. “Your dedication and guidance have been instrumental in driving our success and I am grateful for your unwavering commitment to me and Meta over the years.”
Meta is currently grappling with new obstacles as social media regulations tighten and Apple’s privacy rules impact its targeted advertising business. Additionally, Facebook’s growth in key markets has slowed, with younger users flocking to competitors like TikTok.
