Sony and Siemens have announced a collaboration to develop a groundbreaking virtual reality (VR) headset that includes spatial content capture capabilities.

This announcement comes as Apple prepares to launch its Vision Pro headset, giving Sony and Siemens a chance to steal some of Apple’s thunder in the VR market.

During Sony’s pre-CES press conference, a teaser was unveiled showcasing the new VR setup, which includes an “XR head-mounted display equipped with high-quality 4K OLED Microdisplays” and a video see-through function.

The headset also features unique controllers, including one traditional-looking VR device and a ring-like controller that can be worn on the finger.

Sony claims that these controllers will allow users to create and modify real-scale 3D models and work with virtual space using controllers and keyboards.

The precision of the headset is enhanced by the inclusion of six cameras and sensors for spatial recognition. Unlike Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 system, which is primarily focused on gaming, this new headset is designed with sophisticated 3D content creation in mind for the entertainment and industrial design fields.

The headset will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform. Siemens, Sony’s partner in this venture, will provide its Xcelerator portfolio of industry software, which will help kickstart content creation for the industrial metaverse.

Although this headset is not intended as a commercial product, Sony and Siemens are aiming to release it later in 2024, demonstrating their commitment to innovation in the VR space.
