The Barbican Estate may not be everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to architecture, but nestled within its concrete labyrinth lies a breathtaking sanctuary – the Barbican Conservatory. This indoor rainforest is a hidden gem in the City of London and is a beloved retreat for nature enthusiasts and Instagram aficionados alike.

Concealed within the Barbican Estate resides the Barbican Conservatory, the second largest conservatory in London. Boasting an array of over 1,500 plant and tree species, including rare and endangered varieties, this verdant paradise is a spectacle to behold.

Originally constructed to mask the building’s fly tower, the conservatory has blossomed into a haven for an array of flora and fauna. Visitors can gaze in awe at towering palm trees, lush banana plants, and tranquil fishponds teeming with vibrant koi carp. Keep an eye out for the mischievous terrapins, relocated from Hampstead Heath for causing mischief.

Adjoining the main conservatory is the Arid House, home to a collection of cacti and succulents certain to ignite the passion of any budding plant enthusiast. From dainty, charming cacti to sprawling, exotic succulents, the Arid House is a treasure trove of arid plant life.

In addition to its natural wonders, the Barbican Conservatory plays host to an array of events and exhibitions throughout the year. Presently, visitors can wander through a site-specific commission by Indian sculptor Ranjani Shettar, featuring grand sculptures suspended throughout the conservatory space. The exhibition, titled “Cloud songs on the horizon”, will welcome the public until January 28, 2024.

To maximize your visit, the conservatory will be extending its opening hours and offering late-night sessions on Fridays for after-hours exploration. Even better, admission is free, but ensure to secure your entry slot in advance on the website.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, art connoisseur, or simply seeking a tranquil escape in the heart of London, the Barbican Conservatory is a destination not to be missed. Immerse yourself in the lush greenery, admire the stunning plant life, and partake in the vibrant cultural events hosted within this urban rainforest.
