An alleged hacker illegally entered into Janja’s account on December 11, posting numerous messages including remarks sowing discord between the first lady and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva; as well as posted insulting and demeaning comments about the Brazilian first lady, using language that expresses hostility or prejudice against women, Reuters revealed.
In a live broadcast with President Lula, Janja said that she would definitely take legal action against X. Demonstrating uncertainty about the lawsuit, she said, “I still don’t know if I have to sue them in the U.S. or in Brazil, but I will sue them.”
Janja urged Brazilian regulators to issue regulations governing the social media platforms. Such measures should hold them responsible for their users ‘behaviour’.
President Lula agreed with the demand for international controls over social media, saying this was much needed. But he pointed out “It’s a challenge to know how we could deal with it without imposing censorship.”
Citing existing regulations in the European Union, Lula said that he was particularly interested to see what approaches and measures were taken by the United States and China with respect to this issue.
