Yemen appoints Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak as prime minister

Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council appointed Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, the current foreign minister, as the new prime minister on Monday February 5. This move follows the departure of Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed, who will now assume the role of an advisor to the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, as announced by Yemen’s Cabinet.
Bin Mubarak’s trajectory in Yemen’s political landscape traces back to 2015 when he gained prominence during a tumultuous period. At that time, he was kidnapped by the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels while serving as Yemen’s presidential chief of staff. This incident unfolded amid a power struggle between Bin Mubarak and then-President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
The abduction of Bin Mubarak played a pivotal role in pushing Yemen into a profound political crisis. The ensuing clashes between the Houthis and President Hadi’s presidential guards resulted in the resignation of both the president and the government, exacerbating the country’s already precarious situation.
Despite these challenges, Bin Mubarak has remained resilient and has recently held the position of Yemen’s foreign minister since 2020. His appointment as the new prime minister marks a significant chapter in Yemen’s complex political history.
