UK Prime minister Rishi Sunak took to Twitter yesterday to congratulate Qatar on its world-class hosting abilities in a show of support for the Gulf country.
“Hats off to Qatar for hosting an incredible World Cup so far. The group stages will be remembered as one of the all-time greats. Come on England. Keep the dream alive” the British PM tweeted.
Sunak is not the first world leader to support Qatar. On the eve of the FIFA World Cup 2022, amidst a barrage of controversy that the media themselves are now questioning, French president Emmanuel Macron remarked that “sport should not be politicised”, highlighting the strong relationship between Qatar and France that was “frank, friendly and constructive”.
Today, in as spectacular a turnaround as this World Cup has provided on the pitch, Reuters reported that the president of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan visited Doha today for the first time since Saudi Arabia and its allies ended the boycott on Qatar some two years ago, “lauding Doha’s hosting of the World Cup as a “success” for all Arabs”.
