Twitter, now owned and operated by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, stated that the new encrypted messaging service is available to verified users who have installed the latest version of the app. This move comes as part of Musk’s dedication to fostering a safer and more private platform for its users.
The Twitter Blue subscription, which is now the basis for verification on the platform, comes at a cost of $8 per month or $84 a year. This premium feature offers users a range of enhanced functions, most notable of which is now the encrypted messaging service.
In line with this, Musk conveyed his vision for the Direct Messages (DM) feature of Twitter, stating that privacy should be so paramount that even under extreme circumstances, such as a threat, the company should not be able to access the messages.
“As Elon Musk said, when it comes to Direct Messages, the standard should be, if someone puts a gun to our heads, we still can’t access your messages,” the company reiterated in a blog post.
Although the company admitted that it hasn’t quite reached the stringent privacy standards set by Musk yet, it reassured its users that it is actively working towards achieving this goal. This marks a significant step in their ongoing commitment to user privacy and security, with the encrypted messaging service paving the way for future enhancements.
