Tourists can now pay with crypto in Bhutan — a world first
By enabling global travellers to transact using over 100 cryptocurrencies, Bhutan is setting a new standard in both blockchain and travel

The Royal Government of Bhutan has officially integrated cryptocurrency payments into its tourism sector, a partnership born out of collaboration with Binance Pay and DK Bank, according to a report by Fintech Singapore.
This makes Bhutan the first country to use crypto payments in its national tourism policy, allowing international tourists an unprecedented cashless experience and facilitating greater financial inclusion within the kingdom.
Why the sudden buzz?
This initiative is historic as it represents the first adoption of cryptocurrency payments for public tourism services by a sovereign state. By enabling global travellers to transact using over 100 cryptocurrencies, Bhutan is setting a new standard in both blockchain and travel, further promoting accessibility for rural vendors to engage with tourists.
Launched in May 2025, this innovative crypto tourism system is designed to make travel easier and more flexible. Tourists can utilise Binance Pay to settle payments for various services, including flight tickets, hotel bookings, visa fees, entry to monuments, and local shopping. The integration of QR codes simplifies transactions, eliminating the need for cumbersome card terminals.
The main goals of this initiative?
They aim to promote cashless travel for international tourists while boosting financial inclusion, particularly in rural areas of Bhutan. It is also intended to minimise foreign exchange hurdles and reduce transaction costs, simultaneously positioning Bhutan as a leader in technological advancements within sustainable tourism.
The backdrop of this initiative is quite compelling. The local currency, the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), will automatically convert crypto payments to ensure stable payouts. Interestingly, Bhutan boasts a burgeoning crypto mining sector, holding approximately 12,062 BTC valued around $1.17 billion. Over 100 businesses, including many in rural sectors, have already signed on with Binance Pay, facilitating this new era of payments.
What does this mean for the crypo and travel sector?
This initiative not only pioneers the use of cryptocurrency on a national tourism scale, but it also makes visiting Bhutan more accessible and efficient. Moreover, it aligns with Bhutan’s vision for innovation and economic diversification while tapping into the massive $3 trillion global crypto market.
CEO of Binance, Richard Teng, said that this move could serve as a model for leveraging technology to bridge cultural gaps. “This move sets a model for using technology to connect cultures,” he noted.
Similarly, Damcho Rinzin, Director of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, characterised the initiative as a testament to the country’s dedication to fostering digital convenience and innovation. In his words, it is “a symbol of the country’s commitment to digital convenience and innovation”.
