As we embrace technology to simplify and enhance our lives, it’s crucial to recognise the hidden health risks that may accompany these advancements. The convenience and excitement of modern gadgets often overshadow potential dangers, leaving us unaware of their impact.

Certain devices, while indispensable, have raised concerns about their long-term safety, including possible links to cancer such as the recent allegations that Apple uses dangerous chemicals in the bands of its Apple Watch. Below are some of the most concerning examples of gadgets that may be harmful to your health.

1. Smartphones: A Radiation Risk?

The modern-day essential, smartphones, emit radiofrequency (RF) radiation, which has sparked concerns about potential links to brain cancer. While studies remain inconclusive, organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) have classified RF radiation as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” Prolonged and close exposure, such as holding your phone against your ear for hours, could increase potential risks. To play it safe, experts recommend using hands-free devices and keeping phones away from your body whenever possible.

2. Laptops and Tablets: Not Just a Heat Problem

Laptops and tablets, especially when used directly on the lap, generate heat and emit low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Extended exposure to these EMFs has been linked to fertility issues and, in some studies, an increased risk of cancer. A simple fix? Use a laptop stand or desk to create distance.

3. Smartwatches and Fitness Trackers

While convenient for tracking health metrics, wearables emit small amounts of radiation. Though the levels are considered low, consistent exposure over time—especially for devices worn 24/7—has raised questions about long-term effects.

Apple is currently being accused of employing harmful chemicals in its Apple Watch bands in a class-action complaint. The “Ocean,” “Nike Sport,” and “Sport” Watch bands are said to have excessive concentrations of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also referred to as “forever chemicals,” according to the lawsuit. These substances have been linked to major health problems like cancer, birth abnormalities, and infertility.

According to a recent study that evaluated 22 smartwatch bands from different companies, 15 of them had dangerous PFAS, which is included in the case.In spite of Apple’s assertion that the synthetic rubber used to make its Watch bands, fluoroelastomer, is harmless and devoid of dangerous PFAS chemicals, the lawsuit contends that Apple has hidden the existence of these hazardous materials.

As a precaution, consider taking breaks from wearing these gadgets.

4. Hair Dryers: The Surprising Culprit

This may surprise you, but hair dryers, a common household item, release a lot of electromagnetic fields. Although regular exposure has been identified as a possible health risk, infrequent use is unlikely to be harmful. Making the choice of lower-EMF models can lessen dangers.

Balancing Convenience and Safety

There will always be technology, but reducing health hazards requires understanding. Basic safety measures can help reduce the risk of injury, such as avoiding close contact with electronics, wearing radiation shields, and taking regular rests. Being knowledgeable enables us to get the rewards of our gadgets without compromising our health.
