For Indonesia, a developing country where urban life is rising, and intelligent cities present great social, economic, and environmental opportunities. This inspired Indonesia’s efforts to adopt smart and sustainable urban development practices.

The Indonesian strategy began in 2017 with the digitization plan called “The 100 Smart Cities National Movement”. With a population of over 273 million and rapid urbanization, the Indonesian government has embarked on an ambitious journey to transform 100 cities across the archipelago into smart cities. The program aims to curb urbanization issues, as the movements feature innovative infrastructure projects, eco-friendly initiatives, and urban planning strategies to improve residents’ quality of life. Studies expect that by 2045, 83% of the Indonesians will live in urban areas.

Led by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT), the 100 Smart Cities National Movement is a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to embrace the digital era. This program aims to leverage cutting-edge technologies, data analytics, and citizen engagement to address urban challenges, enhance public services, and foster economic growth.

Cities that aspire to be part of this movement undergo a rigorous selection process, considering factors such as infrastructure, governance, and ICT readiness. Each city then develops its own roadmap and action plan tailored to their unique needs. The program encompasses various focus areas, including transportation, healthcare, education, governance, public safety, environment, energy, and waste management.

The success of the 100 Smart Cities National Movement hinges upon collaboration among government entities, local authorities, private sector partners, and citizens. Together, they create a dynamic ecosystem that drives innovation and sustainable development. By fostering partnerships, sharing knowledge, and pooling resources, stakeholders work hand in hand to implement smart city projects and ensure their long-term viability.

At the heart of the smart city revolution in Indonesia lies technology. The implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital platforms drives efficiency, connectivity, and sustainability. Smart transportation systems optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance public transport. Integrated healthcare platforms improve access to medical services, while e-governance initiatives streamline administrative processes.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the 100 Smart Cities National Movement has implemented robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Performance indicators track the progress of each city’s smart initiatives, facilitating continuous improvement and knowledge sharing. Regular assessments enable stakeholders to measure the impact of their interventions, make data-driven decisions, and adjust strategies accordingly.
