The incident occurred while engaging with reporters amidst touring the construction site of the Gadeokdo New Airport.

According to the police, the assailant, a man in his 60s, attacked Lee with a 7 inch (18cm) knife when he approached him for an autograph, leaving the politician with a 1-centimeter laceration on the left side of his neck.

Kwon reported that Lee underwent a vein reconstruction surgery after doctors were worried about potential excessive bleeding due to suspected damage to Lee’s jugular vein.

According to the democratic party spokesperson Lee is in a conscious state and he is recovering in the intensive care unit (ICU).

In South Korea the attack has been described as an act of “terrorism” and a serious threat to democracy.

In what may be called a rescue moment and a hope for justice, onlookers intervened quickly, holding the assailant captive until he was handed over to the authorities at the scene.

As supporters urged Lee to be strong, South Korea’s national police agency has pledged to tighten up measures in protecting “key personnel” in order to avoid a subsequent incident.
