President of Senegal, Macky Sall is advocating for the adoption of the amnesty bill as part of efforts to pacify the political arena and safeguard national unity and the rule of law.

The amnesty bill according to him will dwell on the facts relating to political demonstrations occurring between 2021 and 2024 during which some protestors died.

''I will urge the deputies of our majority, our leaders, and even the opposition deputies to vote for this amnesty law to overcome these difficulties,” he was quoted by the Agence De Presse Senegalaise.

“In a spirit of national reconciliation, I will refer to the National Assembly this Wednesday after its adoption in the Council of Ministers, a general amnesty bill on the facts relating to political demonstrations occurring between 2021 and 2024,” he continued.

The President announced this during the opening of the national dialogue held at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center in Diamniadio to find a consensual date for the organization of the presidential election.

The president’s announcement follows opposition to the amnesty bill by political leaders who argue that it will pardon persons responsible for the death of some of the protestors.

“We are in a state of law. Anyone who commits acts contrary to the law will face justice. This is why I oppose the amnesty law,” El Hadji Diouf, a lawyer said during the national dialogue.

Meanwhile, Senegal is yet to set an election date after he postponed elections that were to take place on February 25 without setting a new date.
