Russia reopens embassy in Burkina Faso after closure in 1992
After 31 years of closure, the Embassy of Russia has been reopened in Burkina Faso.
After 31 years of closure, the Embassy of Russia has been reopened in Burkina Faso. A ceremony was organised by the Russian Federation in Burkina Faso on December 28 to mark the official resumption of activities in the West African country.
The event held in the capital Ouagadougou saw the presence of Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélem de Tambela and other diplomatic corps.
The significant occasion reflects the commitment of Russia and Burkina Faso to strengthen bilateral ties in the face of recent tensions between the French-colonised country.
“This resumption of activities of the resident embassy of the Russian Federation in Ouagadougou recognizes the excellence of the relations between our two States in recent years, and reflects the solidity of the bonds of friendship which unite the Russian and Burkinabe people,” Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation and Burkinabè abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré was quoted by media outlet Sidwaya.
The Minister further praised the efforts of the Russian Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Alexey Saltykov towards the project’s success.
Alexey will be the interim ambassador until the Russian government selects another ambassador for the embassy.
Burkina Faso’s reopening comes 10 years after the reopening of the country’s embassy in Moscow.
Meanwhile, Russia has transported about 25,000 tonnes of wheat to Burkina Faso to support agriculture.
