According to an announcement on Thursday, an investigation into racism claims lodged by Qatar with the United Nations against Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, has concluded. As all parties reached an amicable conclusion, the case is closed.

The Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) established a Conciliation Commission to investigate the complaint lodged by Qatar, following the diplomatic crisis eight years ago that escalated to a blockade of Qatar by Gulf neighbours, including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Diplomatic relations have since resumed. “I hope that the consensus found by Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia to discontinue the proceedings is the result of a genuine dialogue between the parties to end the dispute which arose in 2018 concerning allegations of racial discrimination,” stated CERD Chair, Verene Shepherd, according to the United Nations news bulletin. The statement was made during the body’s meeting on 26th January and marked the end of the proceedings.

In March 2018, Qatar made history in the UN Committee’s for submitting complaints against Saudi Arabia and the UAE to the CERD. Their complaint against Saudi Arabia was resolved in 2022 at the request of both State parties.

“The CERD monitors global implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which entered into force more than 50 years ago” according to the UN site.

Ms. Shepherd concluded, “such cooperation demonstrates States parties’ steadfast engagement to the collective enforcement of the Convention,”.

Only one such complaint remains lodged with the UN body CERD, that of Palestine against Israel.
