In the world of football, few names are as synonymous with greatness as Lionel Messi. The Argentine superstar spent his entire professional career with Barcelona, dazzling fans with his incredible skill, creativity, and goal-scoring prowess. But after much speculation about his future, Messi shocked the football world by signing with Paris Saint-Germain in August 2021 for a two-year contract.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are currently facing a difficult situation regarding the contract of their superstar player, Lionel Messi. The Argentine superstar’s current deal with PSG is set to expire at the end of the season, and while he has received a proposal, nothing has been finalized yet.
But now, as Messi’s contract with PSG approaches its end, there is once again speculation about his future. And according to a report by Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo, PSG’s Qatari headquarters in Doha has made it clear that Messi must be retained at all costs.
The Qatari royal family, which owns PSG, has made no secret of their ambition to make the French club one of the world’s top footballing powerhouses, and signing Messi was a clear statement of intent. If PSG are to achieve that goal, then keeping Messi is still crucial. Messi has been in a great form since joining the French club, scoring 29 goals in just 66 appearances across all competitions. He has formed a formidable attacking trio with Neymar and Mbappe, and the three have helped PSG to win a number of domestic trophies.
Although there have been reports indicating that Lionel Messi is looking for a contract that mirrors Kylian Mbappe’s terms, recent reports suggest that the experienced forward has not made such a request. PSG has been making efforts to extend Messi’s contract since 2022, but discussions were interrupted due to his involvement in the FIFA World Cup. Nonetheless, Messi’s father and agent, Jorge Messi, had agreed in principle that his son would continue playing for the French team. Unfortunately, negotiations have since lost momentum.
The situation is creating a headache for the French champions, as Barcelona is now in a position to welcome Messi back to Camp Nou. PSG had previously expressed their willingness to keep Messi during a face-to-face conversation with Jorge Messi. However, they did mention that salary concerns (Messi earns an after-tax salary of £31million ) might arise with Financial Fair Play (FFP) issues looming on the club.
Recent reports even suggested that PSG had second thoughts about renewing Messi, as some of the fans turned against the former Barcelona captain during a game against Rennes, jeering and whistling at him. However, it is now being claimed that PSG officials are under pressure from Doha to ensure Messi’s continuity, with Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Luis Campos having been instructed to make it their top priority.
