One Month On: World Cup Qatar 2022’s record-breaking 172 goals
FIFA dubbed Qatar’s World Cup “the best ever”. A month after the final whistle of the soccer World Cup, FIFA announces the record-breaking statistic of 172 goals scored during the tournament last November and December in Qatar, the highest number of goals in the history of the tournament.
88,966 spectators packed into Lusail Stadium and close to 1.5 billion around the world watched a nail-biting final between Argentina and France on 18 December 2022. Lusail Stadium in Qatar’s capital of Doha hosted 3 matches, including the final, that saw the highest attendance for a match registered at a FIFA World Cup since USA 1994 when Brazil played Italy in front of 94,194 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Cristiano Ronaldo became the first man to score at five FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022) while Lionel Messi became the first player to score in four successive knockout stage matches in a FIFA World Cup since the round of 16 was introduced into the modern era, at Mexico ‘86.
Canada’s Alphonso Davies, 22, scored the fastest goal after just 68 seconds against Croatia. At the tender age of 18, Spain’s Gavi became the youngest goal scorer at a World Cup since Pelé in 1958, with a spectacular strike amid the 7-0 win against Costa Rica.
172 goals were celebrated during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 making it the highest scoring FIFA World Cup in history, eclipsing the previous highest total of 171, in both 1998 and 2014.
