The North Korean leader Kim Jong Un wants to ramp up war preparations. During an annual meeting of the country’s ruling workers’ party he urged the nation’s industrial and military sector to prepare for war after what he called “confrontation moves by the U.S. and its vassal forces unprecedented in history”.
“Set forth the militant tasks for the People’s Army and the munitions industry, nuclear weapons and civil defence sectors to further accelerate war preparations”, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday.
According to Kim, North Korea would not be reluctant in testing weapons or modernising the military. According to analysts, a robust military posture could be a strategy to build leverage for future diplomatic relations with Washington after next year’s US presidential elections
North Korea has engaged in series of weapons tests resulting in South Korea, Japan, while the U.S has tightened political and defence cooperations. The 3 countries have recently activated a system to share real-time data on missile launches from North Korea.
Pyongyang had achieved a milestone by successfully launching its first military spy satellite; tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the solid-fuelled Hwasong-18 and embodied nuclear power in the country’s constitution. According to official statements, it aims to further expand strategic cooperation with “anti-imperialist independent” countries while in the process of deepening ties with Moscow.
