Meta is launching a web version of Threads in an effort to revive the social media platform, which competes with X, previously known as Twitter. Threads initially experienced rapid growth when it debuted in July but subsequently lost users due to its limited features. Meta aims to introduce new functionalities through the web version, although experts suggest more work is needed to regain customer interest.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced the web version’s rollout on the platform, sharing an image of himself working on Threads for the web. Users will now have the capability to post threads, browse their feeds, and engage with other users’ threads on the web. However, certain features from the mobile app will not be available initially, such as profile editing and direct messaging integration with Instagram, Threads’ sister platform. Meta plans to add more features in the coming weeks to align the web and mobile experiences.
Threads achieved over 100 million users within a week of its launch but saw a significant decline by the end of July. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, hopes this move will reverse the trend. Threads was initially launched in a basic form, disappointing users expecting a robust Twitter alternative. Offering a web version is seen as an important step, but further improvements are required.
One notable omission is the lack of a search function, a feature users have requested and experts believe is necessary for competing with X. Additionally, Meta’s reluctance to implement hashtags, despite their use on Instagram, is seen as a missed opportunity to attract users back to Threads.
There is a possibility that continued controversial moves at Twitter could maintain interest in an alternative platform like Threads, provided it offers a more advanced version. Will it work? We will have to wait and see.
