A highly esteemed individual within the arenas of drug discovery and community health, renowned for her innovative research and steadfast dedication to scientific and societal advancement, that is how Gloria Azu has been described by the Nigerian Tribune.
Her fervour for propelling scientific progress for the betterment of communities on a global scale has propelled her to notable heights in her career, characterised by esteemed accolades and acclaim for her pioneering contributions to drug discovery.
“Advancing science to benefit communities globally is what drives my work,” Izu is quoted to have said.
With a specific emphasis on drug discovery from natural products, Izu’s work has garnered significant recognition, including the International Society of Endocrinology Travel Grant in 2016, affording her the opportunity to attend the 17th International Congress of Endocrinology and the 15th Annual Meeting of the Chinese Society of Endocrinology in China.
The Nigerian Tribune further reported that her research on medicinal plants, specifically Launaea taraxacifolia, resulted in her receipt of the Addgene-Seeding Labs Plasmid Grant in 2018, as well as the International Foundation of Science Award, further solidifying her status as a leading figure in the field of drug discovery.
Currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Technology at the Central University of Technology, Free State, South Africa, Gloria Izu’s research focuses on the exploration of novel bioactive compounds with antioxidant and antidiabetic properties from underutilized waste products of indigenous African fruits. Supported by grants such as the NRF-TWAS grant and the CUT M&D Research Award, her work is poised to make a significant impact and is set to be completed by December 2024.
Beyond her research endeavours, Gloria Izu has made substantial contributions to the scientific community, serving as an expert journal article reviewer for the Journal of Drug and Chemical Toxicology, as well as an abstract reviewer for various conferences. With an extensive publication record and domain expertise, Dr. Izu’s influence is widely acknowledged, culminating in the prestigious 2024 Global Recognition Award, in recognition of her exceptional research achievements.
Again, Izu’s academic background, which encompasses a BSc in Biology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, and an MSc in Animal Physiology from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, has laid the groundwork for her research interests in natural product extraction, drug development, molecular docking and dynamics, and compound isolation. Her expertise also extends to high-content screening, target identification, and validation, leaving an indelible mark in the field.
Actively engaged in the professional community, Gloria Izu is a member of esteemed organizations such as the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer, and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
