Meet Africa’s oldest dinosaur, a 230-million-year-old fossil

A fossil find has thrown new light on the past history of African dinosaurs. Scientists discovered a 230-million-year-old fossil in Zimbabwe, which is now considered Africa’s oldest known dinosaur. The fossil, unearthed in northern Zimbabwe’s Mbire District, belonged to a tiny, long-necked dinosaur that was probably approximately one meter tall and two meters long. Mbiresaurus moved on two legs, had a slim body, and is thought to have been herbivorous, eating the luxuriant vegetation of the Triassic epoch. This dinosaur is a member of the sauropodomorphs, an early group of dinosaurs that evolved into the massive, long-necked sauropods that dominated the Jurassic world.

What makes this discovery particularly significant is the dinosaur’s age. At 230 million years old, Mbiresaurus is among the oldest dinosaurs found anywhere on Earth, dating back to the Triassic period, a time when dinosaurs had just begun to emerge. This early period is crucial for understanding how dinosaurs spread across different continents.
